BG* exists to provide boutique & affordable physical media (primarily CDs) for local artists in the Pōneke music scene.
The increasing popularity of physical media gives artists an opportunity that streaming services cannot provide.
However, creating your own physical media as an artist is easier said than done. Especially during a cost of living crisis (enroll to vote). There are several businesses that provide Cd production however the minimum quantities and prices are often only viable for already well established artists with large fan bases; you are forced into large production runs and often stuck with generic formats.
DIY is a great alternative to these problems, but many artists and bands have no idea where to start or simply can’t afford the upfront costs. This can leave them unsatisfied with the result of their work and struggle to make their money back.
Babygabriel is my vision to make things easier and more affordable for artists. I want to use my skills across different mediums to help local musicians create their own CDs, so they can focus on their art, and improve access to income.
The increase in popularity of CDs has led to their mass production, with most major labels seeking to maximise profit, leading to lazy, low quality CDs that do not reflect the creativity of the artists themselves. By connecting with artists and intertwining different techniques like screen printing and textiles, I want the artists passion and creative identity to be reflected in my work while still making it as affordable as possible, and providing greater choice of quantity, whether they want 10 CDs or 100.
